Well, I’ve been fascinated by Wordpress since I first discovered it … now really regretting the months/years I spent poring over really complex systems of getting a website together. First I learnt html, then I started fiddling about with all the free Content Management Systems online. In fact, my first successful website was written in dotNetNuke - free but such a pig (slow) to update that it can literally take me 30 minutes to write something as small as this first paragraph and get it live online!
I am so glad I found Wordpress.
What I love most about Wordpress are all those lovely plugins. Before, if I’d wanted some extra functionality it’d take me a lot of money to have things developed just the way I want. Now, with Wordpress plugins, I can get pretty much 99% of exactly what I want, instantly, and always under $40/£20. Now, obviously a lot of Wordpress plugins are free, but sometimes you’ve just got to admit that somebody spent a LOT of time building a plugin - and if it achieves exactly what you want, then they DESERVE the cash!!
Whatever you’re doing online, with a website, it would be rare to not want or need a membership site. Membership sites are brilliant because you can put all sorts of goodies in there for people to enjoy. Members could be your friends, people at a local social club, or a pub/club. Really, anybody who will be returning to your site regularly. Not all websites are for the whole world. Many people are writing some great websites now, very quickly, with Wordpress, just for their local area, their small business customers, their social club friends, their local church goers. In fact, name any 3 people that share an interest and you’ve got a membership site that needs building! After all, without a sense of belonging, why would people keep coming back?
And today, I found that there is a way of building membership sites with Wordpress. Yes, you can make a membership site with Wordpress - how great is that!! And, it’s as cheap as chips as you’d just be using free plugins … but which ones? It can take weeks/months to even get close to having the right set at your fingertips. Maybe for now you just want to kick it around and see.

How about spending a week or two getitng to know Wordpress and how to build a Wordpress membership site before launching yourself in your local area as somebody who can create a membership site for small businesses/pubs/clubs/societies? You could probably knock them up in 2 hours and charge £50 a time. Or charge £99 and give them some training. Or maybe charge them £119 and include the cost of hosting/getting the domain name.
Or, like me, you could simply decide that the price is right to play around with it.
